SINGAPORE – After amassing several hits in the last 16 years, American R&B singer Jason Derulo says his next album will be his final one.
Titled The Last Dance, the star behind club-friendly pop hits such as Whatcha Say (2009), Want To Want Me (2015) and Savage Love (2020) described the upcoming album, which he is working on, as his best work.
“It’s some of the most exciting music I’ve ever done,” the 35-year-old says in a Zoom interview from Los Angeles, where he was on his way to a taping of American television game show Wheel Of Fortune (1975 to present).
“I’m just in the prime of my life. I feel like I’m a better singer than I’ve ever been, a better writer than I’ve ever been, and I just have a lot to talk about.”
So, why stop with the next album? “There are other things that I want to do, and I’d love to move into a different chapter. I’m going to spend a lot of energy on making films, as well as continuing to cultivate the businesses I have, and family.”
He acted as American soul singer Ron Isley in Spinning Gold, a 2023 biopic on music executive Neil Bogart, and was a judge and coach on reality music shows like the 2023 season of The Voice (Australia) (2012 to present).
In a 2023 interview with Forbes magazine, he said his car wash chain, Rocket Carwash, is valued at US$2 billion (S$2.66 billion).
For now, fans can still catch the Florida native, who has also made his name as a TikTok star, on stage. On June 25, he will play his first concert in Singapore at The Star Theatre.
The show was originally supposed to take place at the Arena @ Expo on March 20. But on March 14, concert promoters LAMC announced a change in the venue and date, citing “unforeseen circumstances”.
Ticket buyers will be given new tickets for the rescheduled show, while those who want a refund can contact ticketing agency Sistic by the end of March 21 (call 6348-5555 or go to www.sistic.com.sg).
Audience members better take along their dancing shoes, Derulo says, because he promises a high energy show.
“I have some of the best dancers in the world, some of the best musicians with me, man, and it’s always an extravaganza. I think our show is unlike any other show on planet Earth.”
He is keen on spending more time in Asia. He was recently in India to promote Snake (2025), a single he recorded with India-based Canadian-Moroccan dancer, actress and singer Nora Fatehi, 33.
“I want to make a real mark in the Asian community,” he says. “I feel there’s still a lot of performance emphasis on that side of the world. People are still performing, they’re still dancing, just putting on real shows, and that’s the world I come from. So, it just makes sense.”
Born Jason Joel Desrouleaux, the singer found success early with debut single Whatcha Say, a pop-R&B hybrid that sampled British singer-songwriter Imogen Heap’s 2005 song Hide And Seek, and went to No. 1 on the US Billboard singles chart. The track would later be included in his self-titled debut album released in 2010.
Derulo went on to release four more albums, including the fifth and most recent one, Nu King (2024), and scored more hits such as Talk Dirty (2013), which features American rapper 2 Chainz.
In 2020, during the Covid-19 lockdowns, Derulo started posting clips on TikTok, creating content that mixed dancing, humour and viral challenges. His videos became immensely popular and, today, according to Forbes, he is the sixth-biggest music star on the platform, with 66.1 million followers.
A lot of his recent content features his three-year-old son Jason King, whose mother is Derulo’s former girlfriend, online personality Jena Frumes.
Asked how he would feel if the boy wants to follow his footsteps and be a musician and content creator, he says: “Whatever he wants to do, he definitely seems to really like music.”
The star described the upcoming album, which he is working on, as his best work.

In recent times, Derulo has also become an advocate for the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in creating new music. He uses AI to dissect and study previously recorded songs to find out the different layers of instruments that are in them.
“You can pull inspiration from songs on a different level now, whereas back in the day, you would just have to listen to the song as it is. Now, I can pull apart any song that there ever was and be like, ‘Oh, that was a cool layer that they added to the guitar’, or focus on the grit that they put in the bass.”
