“I have three types of weekends. A really slow, lazy one, a fun one, and one in which I take a quick trip somewhere.
The slow and lazy weekend is one in which I don’t have to do anything or be anywhere in a rush. I just take my time to recalibrate my mind and clean the house. I love cleaning the house.
On the more fun weekends, I hang out with my friends, either to have some grub or sit around in their homes. I’m not that exciting of a person when it comes to rest time.
We usually hang out at one of our homes, and the tradition is to order Thai food and end it with potato chips.
I also enjoy finding the time to take my mum to watch shows – such as plays, musicals and live street performances – because we used to do that a lot together when I was much younger.
In August, I took her to see New Bahru Presents: Don’t Call Him Mr Mari Kita at Wild Rice @ Funan, directed by Wild Rice founding artistic director Ivan Heng. Watching it was really special. It had been a while since my mother had watched a theatre production.

It was Heng who told me she would truly enjoy this one. He knows that my mother loves music and used to be a piano teacher. And he was right.
She was immersed in the music and performance. It was magical to see her enjoying it, dancing and singing along.
The other type of weekend, in which I take a quick trip, could be to anywhere time permits. A change in pace and environment is always nice, and I’m very grateful for these opportunities to switch things up. Usually, it’s somewhere I can slow down as well.
One of the more memorable ones was a trip to the Gold Coast, Australia, where I got to learn the basics of flying a plane. It was a little aircraft, but it was still super cool.
I always feel that our lives are very fast-paced. So, rest, to me, is one in which I can spend my time with the people I love, as well as do and think about absolutely nothing. That’s my perfect weekend.”
