Who: Local veteran actor-host-DJ Marcus Chin, 70, has been one of the Top 10 Most Popular Male Artistes at the Star Awards every year since 2021.

A DJ at Love 972, he is one of the four hosts of the local Chinese radio station’s The Breakfast Quartet on weekdays from 6 to 11am, together with Chen Biyu, Dennis Chew and Mark Lee.

In the Love 972 30th Anniversary Stage Play on Sept 27 and 28, he plays a Cantonese-speaking DJ at a struggling radio station which faces imminent closure.

“Ideally, I would sleep until 11am on Saturday, then go out for lunch and a foot massage. But the highlight of my weekends is having a meal and coffee with some friends on Saturday evenings, usually at a hawker centre, coffee shop or restaurant.

I have about five or six friends I usually call on. Since I do not drive, I would ask them to pick me up from my home in Commonwealth and we head to wherever there is good food.

One place I frequent is Hock Ann Prawn Noodle Lor Mee at Bukit Merah View Market & Hawker Centre. A bowl of soupy prawn noodles with pork ribs costs $6, and I order it with yellow noodles and vermicelli.

The soup is always thick, aromatic and served very hot, which I like. Although there are usually six or seven people waiting in line, the food is worth queueing for. It is the perfect dish to end the week with.

Another place I love eating at is Sin Huat Eating House in Geylang. I love its crab bee hoon, which makes my mouth water just thinking about it. It uses Sri Lankan crabs, which typically costs upwards of $100, but it is worth it. The bee hoon, infused with the juices from the crab, is rich and flavourful.

I also like Koh Brother Pig’s Organ Soup stall at Tiong Bahru Market and Le Le Pot hotpot restaurant in Tiong Bahru. After dinner, my friends and I will go have coffee nearby, like at a Toast Box outlet, and chit-chat.

It is a great way to relieve stress, and it amplifies the joys and lightens the burdens of life. Everyone works so hard from Mondays to Fridays, so I think building relationships with others, especially on the weekends, helps one find a sense of balance.

There is more to life than just working and making money all the time. I believe it is our friendships that make life truly meaningful.”
