Jazz bassist Christy Smith’s upcoming Esplanade concert will focus on Afrobeat-influenced original music inspired by his musical hero, Nigerian icon Fela Kuti.

In the 1970s, the American musician met Kuti when he travelled to Lagos, Nigeria, to be part of Festac ‘77, the Second World Black and African Festival of Arts and Culture.

Smith says of the encounter with the Afrobeat pioneer: “There was a deep dynamic for me in my growth as a person, artist, warrior and spiritual being. I want to pay some respect and homage to a great icon and to this period of transformation in my life.”

Smith, a stalwart in the home-grown jazz scene, has been based in Singapore since the early 1990s.
