LOS ANGELES – Mark Snow, an American composer of music for television – including the distinctively eerie theme for the hit science-fiction series The X-Files (1993 to 2018) – has died at age 78, his agent confirmed.
A cause of death was not provided, but Hollywood trade publication Variety said Snow died on July 4 at his residence in the north-eastern state of Connecticut.
The X-Files starred American actor David Duchovny and actress Gillian Anderson as two paranormal investigators of the Federal Bureau of Investigation probing the eponymous “X-Files”.
The X-Files main theme was released as a single in 1996 and charted internationally. Snow also composed the music for more than 200 episodes of the show and two X-Files feature films – the namesake picture The X Files (1998) and The X Files: I Want To Believe (2008).
Born Martin Fulterman on Aug 26, 1946, Snow grew up in Brooklyn, New York, and attended the prestigious Juilliard School.
He began composing music for television in the late 1970s, garnering 15 Emmy nominations over the course of his career.
Snow also composed the music for US television series such as police procedural drama Blue Bloods (2010 to 2024), Superman saga Smallville (2001 to 2011) and mystery series Hart To Hart (1979 to 1984).
He is survived by his wife Glynnis, three daughters and grandchildren, Variety reported. AFP
