Hong Kong actor Owen Cheung and actress Katy Kung both nabbed surprise wins when they were named Best Actor and Best Actress respectively at the TVB Anniversary Awards on Jan 19.
Cheung, 37, won for his role as an undercover cop in the crime drama No Room For Crime, while Kung, 35, won for her role as a logistics queen in the business drama Big Biz Duel.
Both first-time winners, Cheung and Kung have been in the entertainment industry for 14 and 16 years respectively.
Kung beat hot favourites Tavia Yeung and Rosina Lam from revenge drama Darkside Of The Moon, with some netizens feeling that Yeung or Lam were more worthy winners.
Yeung, 45, was named the Greater Bay Area’s Most Favourite TVB Actress for her role as a trauma survivor-turned-crisis manager in the series.
Meanwhile, Cheung beat front runner Him Law (Happily Ever After?), 40, the husband of Yeung, but drew less flak than Kung for his win.
Cheung also took home Malaysia’s Most Favourite TVB Actor award for his role in No Room For Crime.
No Room For Crime was the biggest winner of the ceremony held in Macau. It also clinched Best Drama Series, as well as Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress for King Lam and Kelly Fu, both 40.
The Most Improved Male Artiste prize went to Nicholas Yuen, 34, while Hera Chan, 30, was named Most Improved Female Artiste.
