TOKYO – Japanese police said on April 8 that they have arrested Japanese actress-singer Ryoko Hirosue on suspicion of injuring a nurse at a hospital in central Japan.
The 44-year-old allegedly kicked a 37-year-old nurse and scratched her arm at a hospital in Shimada, Shizuoka prefecture, at about 12.20am on April 8, said the police. They added that Hirosue was taken there after her car rear-ended a truck on the Shin-Tomei Expressway.
A man believed to be the actress’ manager was in her car when the accident occurred at around 6.50pm on April 7, the police said.
A statement on Hirosue’s official website said she injured the nurse after the car accident “left her in a panic”.
It added she would suspend her activities in the entertainment industry for the time being. She recently performed at Taiwan’s Megaport Festival in Kaohsiung city on March 29.
Hirosue rose to fame in the 1990s with TV series such as Beach Boys (1997) and When The Saints Go Marching In (1998). She has also starred in films, including the Oscar-winning Departures (2008).
She was in the news in mid-2023 after she admitted to an extramarital affair with Michelin-starred chef Shusaku Toba, 46. A month later, she announced her divorce from Japanese candle artist Candle June, 51.
They have a son, 14, and a daughter, nine. Hirosue also has a 21-year-old son from her first marriage to Japanese designer Takahiro Okazawa, 49. KYODO NEWS
