Hong Kong singer Shirley Kwan, who has been out of the public eye for several years, has reportedly been hospitalised and admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) for emergency treatment.
According to an exclusive report by Hong Kong magazine East Week on Oct 7, her son Kwan Chun Yin has returned from the United States and has been keeping watch over her for several days at the hospital.
The 23-year-old was reportedly seen sobbing while hugging his knees on a hospital bench. Shirley Kwan’s father and relatives were also spotted taking turns to visit her, according to East Week.
Hong Kong’s Oriental Daily News, quoting sources, said she was sent to hospital after fainting suddenly at home last week.
The 59-year-old shot to fame in 1989 with her classic song Happy Are Those In Love, and was later known for hits such as Willing To Do Anything (1991) and Cuddling Underneath The Stars (1994). She was established as a music diva alongside singers Faye Wong and Sandy Lam during the 1990s.
Just as Kwan’s popularity was reaching its peak, rumours of her erratic behaviour surfaced, causing her career to stagnate.
She disappeared from the music scene in 2001 due to pregnancy and gave birth to her son in Canada the following year. In 2005, she admitted to having a child out of wedlock, but did not disclose the identity of her son’s father.
It was not until 2014 that she revealed on social media that her son’s father was a Bhutanese religious teacher, and accused the man of showing no concern for her or their son.
Kwan has been involved in several controversies over the years.
The singer sparked a scare in 2012 when she left a suicide note on social media, before finally calling her sister to let her know she was safe after being uncontactable for more than 36 hours.
In 2016, Kwan was rescued from the sea near a beach and said later that she had fallen into the water by accident. In 2017, she was arrested and fined HK$2,000 for shoving a hotel employee after an altercation.
In 2020, she slammed her record company on social media for disrespect and announced her retirement from the entertainment industry.
