The star, who turned 26 on Dec 20, has been staying in the Chinese town of Hengdian for work. There, he was treated to an elaborate 1,000-drone show, planned by his fans on the eve of his birthday.
On Dec 19, Wang’s personal studio posted on Weibo a series of videos of the drone show taken from a hotel room window, with the caption: “Guess who took these.”

In a video taken by a fan, the show lasted close to 10 minutes. It began with an image of a crane next to an image counting up to 2024 from the actor’s birth year of 1998. Wang, whose Chinese name is Wang Hedi, has the Chinese character for crane (“he”) in his name.
The drones then displayed Wang playing basketball – his favourite sport. The figure sported a jersey with the number 23, similar to what Wang wore to the US’ National Basketball Association All-Star Celebrity Game in Indianapolis in February.
The sky then lit up with the drones arranged into various images accompanying slogans, well-wishes and words of love from his fans, such as “D family, we are family”, “This is ‘D’ first time you’re living life, so enjoy it” and “Time will pass, but our love for you will never fade”.
The drones also spelt out the names of the characters Wang has portrayed, such as Dao Mingsi in the Chinese version of the idol drama Meteor Garden (2018) – which marked his acting debut – and Dongfang Qingcang, the demon lord in Love Between Fairy And Devil.
The show also drummed up anticipation for Wang’s upcoming period drama, Guardians Of The Dafeng, with an image of his character.
