SINGAPORE – The Phantom Of The Opera is finally here. Or rather, its actress is.
Acclaimed English singer-actress Sarah Brightman will make her Asian theatrical debut in Singapore when she takes on the role of Norma Desmond, a bygone star of the silent screen era, in the musical Sunset Boulevard. It will be staged at the Sands Theatre in Marina Bay Sands come February 2025.
The 64-year-old star is best known for originating the leading role of Christine in English composer Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom Of The Opera (1986). Sunset Boulevard is also composed by Webber, Brightman’s former husband, whom she split from in 1990.
She last performed in Singapore at a Christmas concert held at The Star Theatre in December 2022.
Brightman said in a press statement released on Sept 5: “I am thrilled to be making my Asian theatrical debut with Sunset Boulevard in Singapore. I have always admired Andrew’s work on this musical and look forward to delving into the incredible score and iconic character of Norma Desmond.
“What makes this experience even more special is that it is happening in Singapore, a city I have always cherished.”
She added: “So, are you ready, Singapore? Because I am ready for my close-up.”
Tickets to the musical, which won seven awards including for Best Musical, Best Original Score and Best Book at the Tony Awards in 1995, will go on sale on Sept 16 at 10am via Marina Bay Sands Ticketing, Sistic and Klook. This is the first time the musical is being staged in Singapore.
A wait-list to be first in line for tickets is now open at organiser Base Entertainment Asia’s website baseasia.com/sunsetboulevard until Sept 10.
