SINGAPORE – Chinese singer Curley Gao went down memory lane during her recent trip to Singapore.
The China-based 26-year-old, who was in town last week for a magazine shoot, posted on her Weibo account on Feb 21 a 22-minute video of herself retracing her steps in the Republic. She was last here six years ago.
Gao found fame after finishing first in Chinese reality competition show Produce Camp 2020. She then debuted with six finalists as part of the limited-time girl group BonBon Girls 303, which disbanded in July 2022.
She moved to Singapore with her parents when she was nine years old, and studied in MacPherson Primary School and Dunman High School. She later attended Berklee College of Music in the United States.
“This vlog is going to be completely in Singlish because I’m in Singapore,” she said in English.
The singer’s first stop was shopping centre Causeway Point in Woodlands, where she met a secondary school friend and ate at Vietnamese restaurant Pho Street.
She then took the MRT train to Bugis Junction, and recalled the period she auditioned for the first season of popular Chinese singing contest Sing! China in 2016. “This is where the dream began,” she said.
Gao did not make the cut, but returned the following year and finished as the runner-up in Chinese singer Na Ying’s team.
Gao also visited Dunman High School in Tanjong Rhu Road and passed by her former home, which was in the vicinity. She recalled the one time when she woke up at 7.52am and still made it to school before 8am.
“I got dressed in, like, three minutes, and I literally sprinted to school,” she said. “That was a record I never wanted to hold again.”
She also stopped by a McDonald’s outlet, saying she missed the french fries there and felt that they were better than those in other countries.
Gao then entered her alma mater and went to the school field, recalling the time she trained for the National Physical Fitness Award test and completed the 2.4km run in about 16 minutes.
She was spotted by a few students who requested to take photos with her, and recognised some of the canteen vendors from her school days.
Gao also reunited with one of her former teachers after she passed by a classroom, who then took her to meet other faculty members, including one of the vice-principals.
