The highly anticipated Chinese animated blockbuster Ne Zha 2 will come to Singapore cinemas on March 6. This was announced by film distributor Encore Films on social media on Feb 22 at 8pm.
“Nezha returns and it’s breaking Chinese films box office records,” Encore Films said in the announcement, sharing a trailer of Ne Zha 2. “It is now the highest-grossing non-English film, the highest-grossing animated film and the eighth highest-grossing film worldwide.”
In the Chinese animated fantasy-adventure Ne Zha (2019), the titular wide-eyed demon-child – doomed to live only three years and shunned by society – triumphed over fate and saved his village.
The child Nezha is voiced by Chinese voice actress Lu Yanting, while the teenage Nezha is voiced by Chinese voice actor Joseph Cao.
Both Ne Zha and its sequel also feature other characters such as Ao Bing, the Dragon King’s third son; Taiyi Zhenren, Nezha’s master; and former villain Shen Gongbao.
The films, loosely based on 16th-century Chinese fantasy novel Investiture Of The Gods, are written and directed by Chinese film-maker Yang Yu, better known by his pseudonym Jiaozi (which means dumpling in Chinese).
Ne Zha 2 overtook American animated coming-of-age film Inside Out 2 (2024) on Feb 18 to become the highest-grossing animated film globally.
The movie, which opened in Hong Kong and Macau on Feb 22, will be released in Malaysia on March 13.
Encore Films also tagged Hong Kong actor-director Stephen Chow in a post on Instagram on Feb 23.
