SINGAPORE – Singaporean actress-host Candyce Toh has spoken out following the news of her husband Hong Junyang’s bankruptcy after a series of failed F&B ventures
Toh, 45, took to her social media accounts and penned a heartfelt post on Oct 14 about how she was deeply touched by the outpouring of concern from everyone.
“Thank you for your support and encouragement. I’m truly grateful and will cherish every thought,” she wrote. The post was accompanied by a photograph of a pair of clasped hands.
She added that Hong’s bankruptcy has shown her “a man’s commitment and responsibility”.
“He bravely faced and took responsibility for the consequences. He is both strong and courageous,” Toh said of the 44-year-old local singer-musician, who is her husband of 16 years.
Hong’s financial woes arose from debts from his Thai street food restaurant chain The Original Boat Noodle.
The singer-songwriter also brought Taiwanese bubble tea brand Machi Machi to Singapore in 2020. It reportedly fizzled out in early 2025.
His other failed F&B businesses include cafe-cum-cloud kitchen Caf and Indian banana leaf rice restaurant BananaBro. Both were started during the Covid-19 pandemic and shut down in 2022.
The couple, who have two daughters aged nine and three, met in 2005 on local reality singing competition Project SuperStar. Hong was the male runner-up and Toh finished in fourth place in the female category.
Toh, who last starred in local film Wonderland (2024), continued: “I also saw a husband who loves home and a good dad who holds the kids in his hands.”
She assured her followers that she “is fine and doing well”, though she admitted that “it is not easy to find a balance between family and career, but I’m trying”.
“Thank you for supporting me all the way. Whether I’m singing, filming, hosting, DJing or live-streaming on TikTok, thank you for always being there,” she wrote.
Toh ended her post with a personal message to Hong, reminding him of her wedding vows back in 2009.
“I will be yours in times of plenty and in times of want, in sickness and in health, in joy and in sorrow.
“I promise to cherish and respect you, to care (for) and protect you, to comfort and encourage you, and stay with you, for all eternity.”
Many of the couple’s celebrity friends, such as home-grown Mandopop star JJ Lin and local actors Dennis Chew, Desmond Tan, Yvonne Lim and Cynthia Koh, liked Toh’s Instagram post and left encouraging messages.
