During British band Coldplay’s first half of their six-night run of concerts at the Goyang Stadium in South Korea, fans were given K-pop treats too.
Juggernaut K-pop boy band BTS’ Jin showed up as a surprise guest for the band’s third night on April 19. Coldplay kicked off the South Korea stop of their Music Of The Spheres world tour on April 16 and will wrap up on April 25.
Jin appeared during a segment when Coldplay’s frontman Chris Martin was speaking to the audience. The 32-year-old Jin was hidden in the audience initially, before he walked up on stage with a placard that read: “Can I sing The Astronaut with you?”
The Astronaut (2022) is Jin’s debut solo single, which was co-written by Coldplay. The band had previously collaborated with BTS on the song My Universe (2021) as well.
Jin and Martin, 48, then sat down at a piano. Martin bantered with Jin and said: “Coldplay is the second best band in the world, BTS may be No. 1, I think.”
He added: “We missed you, man. You’ve been in the military, you still look so handsome. Look at this beautiful man.” Jin enlisted for mandatory military service in 2022 and was discharged in June 2024.
The pair then sang The Astronaut as Martin played the piano. Jin also joined the band for a rendition of My Universe.
Jin is not the only K-pop act to take the stage at Coldplay’s concert in South Korea. K-pop girl group Twice are the band’s official guests and the opening act for all six nights.
The nonet have added Korean-language parts to Coldplay single We Pray (2024) and put it out as a single, according to Warner Music Korea.
Twice kicked off Coldplay’s concert on April 16 with a medley of hit songs and later sang We Pray with the band, inserting lyrics in Korean. We Pray is part of Coldplay’s 2024 studio album Moon Music.
Following Twice’s stage performance, the song with its Korean-language elements from the girl group was released as a single under the title We Pray (Twice Version) on various streaming services on April 17.
In a press statement from Warner Music Korea, Twice said: “(The single) is a meaningful song that encourages overcoming difficulties and sings of peace and hope. It is an honour to collaborate (with Coldplay) and means more to us to be able to sing it in Korean.”
