SINGAPORE – For Hong Kong diva Liza Wang, her concerts at the Sands Grand Ballroom on March 22 and 23 will be particularly meaningful. That is because a portion of the ticket sales will be donated to Ren Ci Hospital, which provides holistic and affordable medical, nursing and rehabilitative care services to the elderly and underprivileged.
Ahead of the shows, the 77-year-old shared with Singapore media over Zoom that it was important to give back. Show organiser Biz Trends Media is making the donation, which she felt was a worthy cause.
She said: “You can come and listen to some songs and do charity at the same time.”
Helping the elderly and sick is a cause close to her heart, she said, as she herself battled thyroid cancer in the 1980s. She has since recovered and is now a member of the executive committee of the Hong Kong Anti-Cancer Society.
She also chairs the Chinese Artists Association of Hong Kong and is active in community service, as well as raising awareness for art forms such as Cantonese opera.
Giving back has always been important to her and is a key motif of her upcoming concerts, as Wang marks almost 60 years in show business.
In 2024, she released a joyful Cantonese song, Make My Day, to thank her fans who have stood by her over the decades. “I hope this song can express my gratitude to fans for their support over the years.”
Collaborating with younger musicians, such as Hong Kong composer Terence Lam, 33, on the track also gave her fresh perspectives and inspired her to keep going.
She said: “They are so full of youthful energy and it motivates me to push forward. Their ideas are different from those of my generation, so I think this is also a kind of learning.”
In addition to the new song, her upcoming shows will feature the costumes and designs from her concerts at the Hong Kong Coliseum in November 2024.
Video clips of those concerts showed her performing her signature numbers. This included Cantonese ballad Love And Passion (1982), the theme song of a Hong Kong drama of the same name, in which she starred together with Hong Kong actors Patrick Tse and Ray Lui.
During the number, she is expected to don a regal black outfit and sparkling crown.
Another track likely to make the set list is the slow and wistful Yesterday’s Glitter (2000), from another Hong Kong drama of the same name, in which she played a patriotic student alongside Hong Kong actor Damian Lau.
The audience can also look forward to her performing a cover of Five Easy Pieces (1980), originally sung by Hong Kong singer and frequent collaborator Adam Cheng, in an off-shoulder white gown and pearl necklace.
Looking back at her long career, she feels nothing but blessed. “I have always felt that the best thing in my life is finding a job which I really love. I love singing, acting and being in musicals. After so many decades, I never felt that I should stop doing it. I have been very lucky.”
