SINGAPORE – Chinese superstar Zhao Liying has rebutted claims that her latest post on social media was not written by her.
Zhao, 37, attended the South-east Asian premiere of her movie The Unseen Sister during the Singapore International Film Festival on Dec 6.
Adapted from Chinese author Zhang Yueran’s 2017 work, the Mandarin-Yunnan dialect thriller is directed by Myanmar-born, Taiwan-based film-maker Midi Z. It also stars Chinese actress Xin Zhilei.
“I am very happy that The Unseen Sister finally met up with friends in Singapore,” Zhao wrote on Weibo late on Dec 6 and posted several landscape shots. “Thank you for your support. I feel it is a nice day today.”
However, some fans wondered if it was posted by her agency in China, as the location was indicated as Beijing instead of Singapore.
She took to the post’s comment section more than 10 minutes later, with the comment showing that she was in Singapore. Her Weibo profile also showed that she was here.
“I posted it myself,” she wrote. “The IP location was displayed by itself. Stop griping (jiwai) and good night.”
Zhao’s comments divided netizens.
Some felt that the actress was being arrogant by using the Chinese term “jiwai”. Others defended her by saying that she is known for being outspoken, earning herself the nickname “Zhao Xiaodao” (Little Knife Zhao).
The actress has also starred in TV series such as The Journey Of Flower (2015), Princess Agents (2017) and Wild Bloom (2022).
