A good night’s sleep is vital to one’s overall well-being, and the right mattress can make all the difference. For those comparing options online, searching for the best mattress in Singapore can be overwhelming, especially with so many materials, firmness levels and features to consider.
Buying a mattress is more than just a feel test. It is a long-term investment in your health and well-being.
Dr Aravind Kumar, consultant orthopaedic surgeon and specialist in spine surgery at Mount Elizabeth Specialist Centre, says: “The right mattress that supports spinal alignment reduces pressure points, helping your body rest and repair efficiently.”
Elvin Chong, founder of Luxury Mattress Gallery with decades of experience in the hospitality and mattress industry, notes that a suitable mattress can improve sleep quality, recovery and mood, while poor support may lead to chronic back pain and muscle tension over time.
Below is a selection of some mattresses available in Singapore, selected for their materials, design and brand reputation.
Also included are some tips to help you choose the best mattress that suits your sleep style and preferences.
Best mattress in Singapore: What to look out for
Experts recommend testing mattresses in person before committing to a purchase.

Before choosing your mattress, these are some factors to consider such as size, firmness, materials, and even a sleep trial period that lets you test the mattress before you commit to the purchase.
1. Consider mattress types
Innerspring: Offers good body and weight support with a bouncy feel due to the coil or metal springs.
Memory foam: Known for contouring to the body, helping with spinal alignment and providing excellent pressure relief, these have a plusher feel. It’s especially ideal for couples because of its motion-reducing transfer support.
Latex: A more natural, eco-friendly option that’s breathable and responsive with cooling properties.
Hybrid: Combination of foam or latex layers with coils, providing a good balance of support, comfort, and cooling. It’s neither too soft, nor too bouncy.
2. Check firmness levels
Firmness levels are typically measured on a firmness scale from one to 10, with one being the least firm.
While the level of firmness is subjective to every individual’s preferences, Dr Kumar recommends a medium-firm mattress for most body types and sleeping positions, noting it provides better long-term spine alignment than overly firm options.
While firmer mattresses are popular among Asians, he cautions that excessive firmness can create pressure points and misalignment.
Medium-firm mattresses, he says, better support the body’s natural “valleys and peaks” for more restful sleep.
3. Determine your sleep position
Side sleepers: Generally benefit from softer mattresses that cushion and provide pressure relief for shoulders and hips.
Back sleepers: Often require a medium-firm mattress for hips, lower back and shoulder support.
Stomach sleepers: Typically need a firmer mattress to protect your chest, stomach, hips and knees, as well as keep the spine aligned.
Both Dr Kumar and Mr Chong agree that sleeping on your stomach is the worst position. It can misalign the spine, strain muscles and joints, worsen snoring or sleep apnea, and even put added pressure on the heart.
4. Evaluate mattress size
Determine a mattress size based on your household or bedroom layout and sleeping habits.
Common sizes include single, super single (or twin), queen, and king. Consider the size of your room and if you share the bed with a partner or if the mattress is meant for kids.
5. Assess durability and consider allergies
For premium quality and a mattress with long-lasting durability, look out for those manufactured with higher-density foams and thicker coils.
Look for hypoallergenic materials such as latex, or mattresses with specially designed anti-allergy covers - ideal for allergy-prone individuals and children.
6. Test the mattress in-person
Dr Kumar highly recommends that buyers test mattresses in person before making a purchase. “They can actually know how firm the mattress is and what it’s going to look like and feel before making a decision,” he says.
When testing mattresses, Mr Chong recommends you should take the time to lie down for at least ten minutes and see if it helps you fall asleep.

Dr Aravind Kumar, a consultant orthopaedic surgeon and specialist in spine surgery, recommends a medium-firm mattress for most sleeping positions.

What is the best mattress for back pain?
Medium-firm to firm mattresses with zoned support or orthopaedic design are often recommended. Brands like Sealy, King Koil, and Tempur offer options developed with back care in mind.
How much should I spend on a good mattress in Singapore?
Quality mattresses typically range from $500 to over $5,000 for a queen-size, depending on materials, technology, and brand reputation.
Hybrid and latex models are usually more expensive than basic foam designs.
What is the difference between memory foam and hybrid mattresses?
Memory foam contours to the body and is known for pressure relief and motion isolation.
Hybrids combine foam with pocket springs for added bounce and airflow, offering a balanced feel.
How do I clean my mattress?
Vacuum your mattress surface monthly using a handheld vacuum with a soft brush attachment. Spot clean stains with a mild detergent and cold water - never soak the mattress. Let it air dry fully before replacing bed linen.
When should I change my mattress?
Both Dr Kumar and Mr Chong recommend changing your mattress every seven to 10 years, or sooner if you notice sagging, discomfort, or disrupted sleep.
What is the best mattress topper to buy in Singapore?
While not essential, a mattress topper can help extend the life of your mattress or adjust its feel.
“Using a topper can help if you feel that your bed is too firm,” says Dr Kumar. He adds that it can also be a practical fix for those not ready to replace their mattress just yet.
The best mattress topper for you depends on your needs:
Memory foam offers pressure relief
Latex provides bounce and breathability
Down alternatives add plush softness
Look for options with a washable cover and 5–8 cm thickness for noticeable comfort. Toppers from brands like Tempur, IKEA and Origin are commonly available in Singapore.
