Audiences might feel like they have seen this all before. There is a little bit of Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games (2008), Veronica Roth’s Divergent (2011 to 2013) and, at one point, even Luca Guadagnino’s Suspiria (2018), as young participants in a shady wellness centre struggle to retain parts of them that hurt but make them who they are.
