SINGAPORE – Make music and interact with a light installation at the Peranakan Museum.
At the Between Threads light projection on the facade of the museum, visitors can change the images on the windows by pressing one of 14 interactive buttons.
The buttons correspond to different notes, creating a musical element to the installation.
The projection map was created by film artist Clare Chong, multidisciplinary designer Jennifer O’Connor, Indonesian digital designer Taufiq Hidayat, ambient artist Kin Leonn and Singapore-based British media artist Jaymi McManus.
Hidayat, 39, says: “I’m excited to be part of this because I normally do installations unrelated to history or museums. There was so much to learn about Singapore and the Peranakan Museum.”
He worked with Chong and O’Connor to create an interactive installation in front of the museum, comprising two structures with embedded sensors.
The sensors can detect movement and visitors can “move” threads in the display by waving their arms.
Visitors can interact with a sensor on the outside of the installation, creating movement between the digital threads.

These works are inspired by an unfinished beaded panel in the museum’s Decorative Textiles Gallery and they celebrate the intricate artistry of Peranakan beadwork.
Hidayat has not seen the beaded panel in person, as he has been too busy making the installation. He says: “I’m excited to be finished so that I can hopefully see the original work now.”
