SINGAPORE – Canadian-Chinese author A.Y. Chao’s debut novel Shanghai Immortal comes in the wake of a slew of Asian women writers climbing bestseller charts with young adult (YA) fantasies.

But Chao, 49, is writing for adults, although she concedes there is a tendency to assume East Asian fantasy novels are automatically YA.
