SINGAPORE – Few book titles have been as deceptively innocuous as Yang Shuang-zi’s Taiwan Travelogue, yet its release in 2020 in Taiwan put Yang at the centre of a literary maelstrom.
The book’s first edition in Chinese credited Aoyama Chizuko as the Japanese author responsible for the account set in 1930s Taiwan, with Yang listed as the translator. An introduction to the text tells of Yang approaching the owner of Chizuko’s original Japanese manuscript for the project, even gesturing to an older translation in 1977.
