The elderly can tap Medisave for flu jabs

Mr Andrew Seow Chwee Guan asked the Ministry of Health (MOH) to consider allowing adults, especially the elderly, to use their Medisave accounts for influenza and pneumococcal vaccinations ("Allow seniors to use Medisave for flu jabs"; Forum Online, May 16).

All elderly people aged 65 and above can use their Medisave for influenza and pneumococcal vaccinations. They can do so under the annual $400 limit for preventive and chronic outpatient care, or the annual $200 Flexi-Medisave limit for the elderly.

This policy on Medisave use is in line with the MOH-appointed Expert Committee on Immunisation recommendation that all persons with high risk be vaccinated against influenza and pneumococcal disease, as they are more susceptible to infections, hospitalisations and complications due to these infections.

Other than the elderly, other high-risk groups include children under five years of age and those with chronic medical conditions or weakened immune systems.
