A few weeks ago, I was distressed to find a parking notice on my car windscreen after a quick lunch with a friend.
I had parked illegally near the eatery.
Resigned that this simple lunch would cost me a lot more than I had anticipated, I waited for the penalty letter from the Land Transport Authority to arrive in my post box.
It detailed my offence and the penalty imposed. The sentence that followed surprised me: "However, in view of your good record, we will not be taking any action against you this time."
The letter made me not want to park illegally again - not because of the fear of the penalty but the graciousness of the authority.
