No compromise on lift safety

We thank Mr Ong Hwee Eng for his feedback ("More proactive approach needed towards lift problems"; Forum Online, March 15).

The Building and Construction Authority (BCA) takes into careful consideration the public feedback it receives.

In fact, the BCA received Mr Ong's feedback on Feb 23, and we responded to him on Feb 25, noting his concerns about the lift at Block 308B, Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1 and informing him that we would follow up with Ang Mo Kio Town Council and its lift contractor.

The BCA has investigated the lift in question and the lift contractor has completed the additional maintenance work required.

Lift owners play an important role in ensuring that their lifts are maintained in accordance with prevailing standards.

Lift owners, including town councils, are required by law to engage registered lift contractors to maintain their lifts regularly, and lift contractors should do so with due diligence.

Lift owners and their contractors are also expected to be the first responders to attend to lift breakdowns.

In an incident where further investigation is required, the BCA may require the lift owner to engage an authorised examiner to investigate the incident and submit a report to the BCA.

The BCA takes a serious view of any non-compliance of its safety regulations and will take enforcement action against the parties responsible, where warranted.
