Extend national e-invoice system to include consumers

I am glad to see that Singapore will be adopting a national e-invoice system (Singapore adopts national e-invoice system; May 22).

The system can go beyond businesses and include consumers in the form of electronic receipts, invoice and delivery notes.

Very often, these receipts are retained only for a short while and then discarded.

Having electronic receipts will cut down the usage of paper and reduce costs for retailers.

Many retailers in countries like the United States are asking if they can forward receipts to an e-mail address instead of printing out a physical copy.

Consumers will benefit from having a clear receipt stored electronically for warranty purposes, instead of losing them or having receipts printed on thermal paper which fades over time.

Those without e-mail addresses could still opt for physical receipts.
