AI is here to stay

Like it or not, artificial intelligence (AI) is here to stay (AI can take over some tasks but will not replace humans: Experts; June 2).

Autonomous cars, bitcoin and smart home technology are here. Some current technologies will go the way of the pager and DVD player.

Some jobs will be disrupted. Lower-end production that requires mass manpower will be done by robots.

Cash transactions will be replaced by cashless systems. Taxi drivers may no longer be required.

New jobs will emerge as companies drive to produce better, small and faster chip performances in the big data and AI era. An example is Micron Technology's planned investment in Singapore of a new 3D NAND facility which will add more than 1,000 jobs.

More engineering and technology jobs will be needed to support the changes.

We must remain positive. The replacement of jobs is irreversible. To survive, we can only keep learning relevant skillsets and adapt to the changes. This cannot stop even if we are in our 40s or 50s.
