Life insurers act only when informed of death

We thank Ms Lim Lih Meil for her letter (Last gift for policy holders; Sept 15).

A policyholder's information is treated with the utmost confidentiality and privacy by each life insurer.

Communication with the next-of-kin is only initiated should the insurer receive notification of the death of the policyholder.

As part of good legacy planning, we encourage all policyholders to inform family members, including any beneficiaries, of the policies they own or the will they made.

This will greatly facilitate the claims process when the time comes.

Alternatively, family members may contact insurers to do a policy search.

Insurers' contact details can be found on the Life Insurance Association Singapore website at www.lia.org.sg
