SINGAPORE - Life science and biotechnology company Sigma-Aldrich opened its Asia-Pacific regional headquarters in the Biopolis Research Park on Friday.
Sigma-Aldrich develops chemical, biochemical and other scientific products and materials that are used in the research, biotechnology, diagnostics and pharmaceutical fields. The new 1500 square metre facility will provide support for its customers in the region through research and development and process development.
The facility includes a Cell Culture Technical Centre, which will handle functions related to the production of biologics, or drugs produced through processes that occur within living cells. The centre includes laboratories that develop and manufacture cell culture media, which is the nutrient-filled material in which cells are cultivated in the lab. It also contains labs focused on modifying the genome of cells to produce the desired drugs.
At the opening ceremony on Friday, Sigma-Aldrich also announced plans to build a distribution centre in Tuas to serve local and regional customers. It is slated to open at the end of this year.
