SINGAPORE – Resorts World Sentosa chief executive Tan Hee Teck has been unanimously elected as president of the Singapore National Employers Federation (SNEF) by the body’s council members in a by-election.
SNEF, which is the union for employers here, said in a statement released on July 26 that Mr Tan will lead the federation’s efforts to advance tripartism and enhance labour market flexibility to nurture sustainable businesses in Singapore.
Tripartism refers to the three-way partnership between the Government, employers and labour movement.
The Straits Times understands Mr Tan was elected to the office in a by-election held on the evening of July 25.
The by-election precedes SNEF’s upcoming annual general meeting, which is likely to be held in September.
SNEF had earlier said in June its council members would exercise the duties of president until the meeting, with no mention of a by-election.
However, ST understands that it reassessed its position after a month, with its council agreeing that it would be best to have clear leadership until the meeting, during which all council positions would be up for election.
SNEF said that Mr Tan will be working closely with council members and the appointed external consultant, who are currently conducting a review of the federation’s internal processes.
“The independent review is expected to be completed in the coming weeks and more updates will be provided accordingly,” SNEF said in its statement.
The position was previously vacant, following the resignation of Mr Robert Yap in June, over what was said to be a governance procedural lapse.
The Ministry of Manpower and National Trades Union Congress subsequently issued statements in support of SNEF, affirming the body’s continued importance to tripartism.
Mr Tan previously served as the federation’s vice-president from September 2022 and has been serving on SNEF’s council for the last 15 years, the federation noted.
The council also unanimously elected Mr Kuah Boon Wee, director of engineering firm MTQ Corp, as vice-president.
He joins the other two serving vice-presidents: Mr Alexander Melchers, managing director of trading firm C. Melchers GmbH & Co in Singapore, and YTL PowerSeraya chief executive John Ng Peng Wah.
SNEF said all council members and office-bearers will serve in their current roles until elections at the next AGM.
