SINGAPORE - The Singapore Maritime Foundation (SMF) has announced the appointment of Mr Andreas Sohmen-Pao, chairman of global shipping company BW Group, as its new chairman at the annual New Year Cocktail Reception hosted by the SMF on Wednesday.

Mr Sohmen-Pao took over the helm from Mr Michael Chia, managing director of marine and technology at Keppel Offshore & Marine (Keppel O&M), who served on the board for a decade, including six years as chairman.

Four new members also joined the board: Mr Chow Yew Yuen, chief executive of Keppel O&M; Mr Loo Tze Kian, managing director of L.C.H.; Mr Ong Poh Kwee, chief operating officer of Sembcorp Marine; and Ms Lisa Teo, executive director for corporate development at Pacific International Lines.

Speaking at the event in ParkRoyal on Pickering, which was attended by some 200 top maritime leaders from the private and public sectors, Mr Sohmen-Pao cited the Maritime Singapore Connect (MSC) Office as one of the upcoming initiatives for the year.

He said the MSC Office will be a new national-level initiative aimed at building an integrated network of various stakeholders on the industry, school and government fronts to focus on education and career guidance, as well as recruitment for the maritime industry.

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore has committed S$4 million for this new set-up under the SMF, as part of SkillsFuture-related initiatives to profile and promote maritime careers.

Mr Sohmen-Pao also said the SMF has plans to promote the Singapore Ship Sale Form, and urged for support from the industry for the upcoming Sea Asia shows and the MaritimeONE Scholarships.

"It is a privilege to be working with a great team in a great industry in a great country. Singapore has been doing all the right things to grow a successful maritime community here, with strong support from industry players," said Mr Sohmen-Pao.

" While the maritime sector is currently facing headwinds, this is what shipping and offshore is all about - braving the waves and the storms while staying focused on the goal," he added.

"The Singapore Maritime Foundation was established to support the vision of a vibrant Maritime Singapore, and we will continue to work on this so that we are even better placed globally in years to come."
