SINGAPORE – Seven days, no spending. It sounded easy enough, but on day two, I had cracked and ordered a $20 McDonald’s breakfast meal.

I was attempting a “no-spend challenge” – one of the many questionable financial trends online –  to make up for a recent trip to Bali where I somehow blew my budget on food, drinks and ocean-view hotel rooms.
