SMRT appoints Keppel executive Abu Bakar Mohd Nor as board director

SINGAPORE - SMRT Corporation on Tuesday (Jan 30) announced that marine industry executive and former soldier Abu Bakar Mohd Nor has been appointed as a board director, with effect from Jan 23, 2018.

Mr Bakar is also managing director (Gas & Specialised Vessels) of Keppel Offshore & Marine, as well as Keppel Singmarine, and sits on various boards in the Keppel Group companies and associates.

Additionally, he sits on the Bureau Veritas South East Asia Technical Committee and on the Workplace Safety and Health Council (Marine Industries) Committee.

His other notable appointments include sitting on the board of trustees of the Singapore Institute of Technology and the board of Singapore's national water agency PUB.

Mr Bakar was recently appointed the president of the Association of Singapore Marine Industries and director of Singapore Maritime Foundation.

He began his career in Keppel's safety department and held various appointments in the operations and commercial departments. In 2011, he became chief executive of Nakilat-Keppel Offshore & Marine Ltd, a joint-venture between Qatargas Transport Company and Keppel.

Within the public sector, Mr Bakar has served in several committees of the Ministry of Defence and was a member of the Safra management committee, chairing various clubs.

Mr Bakar is also the chief of staff of HQ 2 PDF Command, holding the rank of Colonel (NS) in the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF). He served as honarary aide-de-camp to former presidents Ong Teng Cheong and SR Nathan.

In recognition of his contributions to the SAF and community, Mr Bakar received several long and good service medals including the Formation NSmen of the Year award in 1998 and the SAF NSmen of the Year award in 1999.

He was also awarded the Commendation Medal (Military) in 2002, the Public Service Medal (Pingat Bakti Masyarakat) in 2009 and the Public Administration Medal Bronze (Military) in 2015.

In October last year, Mr Bakar also received the Berita Harian Achiever of the Year Award.
