A fire on Oct 15 at a Batam shipyard belonging to an ASL Marine unit left 13 workers dead and 18 injured.

SINGAPORE – A fire at a Batam shipyard belonging to an ASL Marine unit left 13 workers dead and 18 injured, the shipbuilder said on Oct 26.
The incident occurred on Oct 15, 4.20am (Indonesian time), on board a tanker that was undergoing floating repairs alongside a jetty at the shipyard belonging to ASL Shipyard Indonesia, the company said.
All works on board the tanker has been suspended.
ASL Marine said it is providing necessary assistance to the affected victims and their families. It is also assisting the government authorities in their investigation to determine the cause of the incident.
The tragedy comes months after another fire on June 24 at a Batam shipyard, also belonging to the same ASL Marine subsidiary, left four dead workers and injured five.
That incident occurred at around 2.15pm (Indonesian time) on board a floating storage and offloading vessel that was undergoing repairs beside one of the shipyard’s jetties, ASL Marine said on June 25.
All casualties and injured employees worked for ASL Marine’s subcontractor, the group said then.
Shares of ASL Marine fell after the news, with the stock down 2.4 per cent, or 0.5 cent, at 20.5 cents as at 9.22am on Oct 27. THE BUSINESS TIMES
