Hazel is a features correspondent at The Straits Times. She joined the newsroom in January 2024 after working as a tech reporter for a business-to-business media start-up in London and as a features writer at Rice Media. Her bylines have also appeared in Time Out Singapore, Metro UK and Towards Data Science. Before journalism, she worked in a cognitive science lab, where she honed her analytical skills and curiosity about people and their stories.

Electric dreams: The curious tale of a Thomas Edison fan in Singapore

Adorned with miniature replicas of Edison's inventions, the fan was more than a relic of the electrical age, it was also a gateway to the many stories and adventures that would shape CK's life as a collector for the next half a century.

Is it possible to learn a new language using just a language application? If not, how effective are these apps, what are their limitations and strengths, and most importantly, why are they so popular?
Mr Qamar Tahasildar, 35, Strategy and Analytics Manager, will show the different applications – Duolingo, Anki, Pimsleur - he uses to learn Japanese. He will also show the additional textbooks/he purchases to study Kanji; the adapted Chinese characters use in Japanese.
