NEW YORK – The US hopes to discuss efforts to limit the spread of fentanyl with China at an Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) summit in November, a senior US official said on Sept 24.
The official spoke after President Joe Biden announced at an event in New York that new data showed a 10 per cent year-to-year drop in US deaths from fentanyl.
Mr Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping discussed fentanyl at a California summit in November 2023.
The US wants China to take more action at home to prevent the development of chemicals that can be made into fentanyl, the leading cause of US drug overdoses.
The US official was asked if the US and China will discuss fentanyl at the Apec summit in Peru in November.
“I would be very optimistic that we will have this on the agenda,” said the official, adding that the two countries have already seen some results. REUTERS
