Monkeys in India are seen as sacred, but a woman in the northern state of Rajasthan got an unholy fright when two simians climbed up the parapet of her home and grabbed her hair.
In a video that has gone viral online, one monkey is seen grabbing a handful of the woman’s hair. The woman, who appears to be preparing vegetables, gets into a short tug of war with the monkey.
The first monkey then lets go of her hair, but the woman’s relief is brief – a second monkey suddenly appears out of nowhere and gives her hair a mighty pull.
She then drops the plate of raw vegetables and jumps out of her chair, as a man – likely her husband – chases the monkeys away.
The video, posted by Instagram user @beawar_live_news, has racked up more than 118,300 likes. The incident itself took place in Ajmer, a city in Rajasthan, but it is unclear when it happened.
The entire ordeal lasted less than 10 seconds.
Many netizens were shocked by the incident and urged that run-ins with monkeys be taken seriously.
“It’s true that monkeys killed a girl, and yet, everyone thinks it is a joke,” said one netizen.
According to The Times of India, a 15-year-old girl died in February 2024 after she and her sister fell into a well while running away from monkeys in Hathras, Uttar Pradesh.
“Nothing is being done to the monkeys, although many people have been (hurt), including children and the elderly,” commented another netizen.
Other netizens appeared amused by the incident. “I don’t know how, but the monkeys remind me of my baby,” said one user.
