COLOMBO - For Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, the 6.9 million votes he received in the 2019 election was a point of pride. He routinely reminded the public that it was the highest secured by a candidate ever.

Today, however, the number has become a point of ridicule with his popularity souring halfway into his five-year presidential term.
