KATHMANDU – Seven people were killed, four injured and four others went missing after an avalanche hit a climbing expedition on a Himalayan peak in Nepal on Nov 3.

It struck at the base camp of Yalung Ri peak, which rises to 5,630m, in the Rolwaling Valley of Dolakha district in Nepal in the morning.

The dead victims are three US citizens, one Canadian, one Italian and two Nepali nationals, according to Deputy Superintendent of Police Gyan Kumar Mahato of the District Police Office, Dolakha.

He said the avalanche occurred as the team of Nepali and foreign climbers, along with local guides, were at Yalung Ri base camp as part of their preparation to ascend Dolma Khang, which rises to 6,332m.

Rescue operations are ongoing, but officials said the rescue operations were halted at night.

Earlier, the rescue efforts were delayed due to flight restrictions in the Rolwaling region, which required special administrative clearance for helicopter movements.

Even after securing permission, adverse weather caused further delay. THE KATHMANDU POST/ASIA NEWS NETWORK
