The renewed prospect of a genetically modified (GM) food crop making its way to consumers’ plates has revived an acrimonious debate in India.

This follows government approval for the “environmental release” of an indigenous GM mustard hybrid in October, paving the way for commercial cultivation of the country’s first GM food crop developed two decades ago.
