NEW DELHI The first visit by a Vietnamese prime minister to India in a decade saw New Delhi offer funds for patrol boats and coast guard ships, building on a defence engagement and boosting Hanoi’s maritime security.

While this growing engagement appears to align with India’s ambition to emerge as a defence supplier, analysts noted that it has a strategic angle: boosting Vietnam’s maritime capabilities amid the territorial dispute with China in the South China Sea.
