KUALA LUMPUR – A 53-year-old man has been detained over the murder of an elderly woman whose body was found in a freezer in a house in Taman Overseas Union Garden, a residential estate in south-western Kuala Lumpur.

The suspect is reportedly the woman’s son.

Kuala Lumpur Police Chief Commander Rusdi Mohd Isa said the police were alerted to the matter at 8.48am on Nov 12.

“The body has been sent to the Universiti Malaya Medical Centre for a post-mortem examination.

“We are investigating the case under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder,” he said in a statement on Nov 12.

Malay daily Sinar Harian previously reported that the suspect had allegedly murdered his mother, who was in her 80s, and hid her body in a freezer three years ago.

The crime came to light after the suspect called the 999 emergency services due to a health problem.

Sources said that the suspect was standing next to the freezer when the police arrived at the scene.

It is believed that the mother and son had a dispute over religion.

Brickfields police headquarters are conducting further investigations at the scene.

One neighbour, who declined to be named, told Sinar Harian that he was shocked to see an ambulance and several police officers at the house.

“It was a long time since I last saw her (the victim). I thought she went back to her kampung (village) or moved to another house and did not live with his son any more,” he said.

He said that the suspect had lived in the house for over a decade.

“The suspect seemed normal. He would wave and say ‘hello’ if he saw me or other neighbours,” he said. THE STAR/ ASIA NEWS NETWORK
