IPOH – A 41-year-old woman who tried to hug Perak’s Sultan Nazrin Shah during the state-level Independence Day celebration in Ipoh on Aug 31 has been charged with assault.
Nurhaswani Afni Mohamad Zorki, from Kampung Manjoi, was charged under Section 352 of Malaysia’s Penal Code before Magistrate Mohd Harith Mohd Mazlan on Sept 8.
No plea was recorded.
Nurhaswani Afni allegedly committed the offence in front of the Ipoh Town Hall on Jalan Panglima Bukit Gantang Wahab at 8.20am on Aug 31.
If convicted, she could face up to three months in jail, a fine of up to RM1,000 (S$300) or both.
Deputy public prosecutor Nasrul Hadi Abdul Ghani said investigation findings indicated that the accused may be suffering from schizophrenia.
“We request that the accused be observed for a month to determine whether she is fit to stand for trial,” he said.
Magistrate Harith then ordered the woman to be taken to Hospital Bahagia Ulu Kinta for a month’s observation.
He also set Oct 8 for the next mention of the case.
During the incident, the accused allegedly rushed towards the Sultan on stage while the state anthem was being played and attempted to hug him.
She was stopped by security personnel before being led away.
After the incident, Perak police chief Noor Hisam Nordin said the woman had previous drug-related cases and was under psychiatric supervision. THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK
