ALOR SETAR (THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK) - Police have arrested a 38-year-old woman who is believed to have dumped her newborn baby in the washing machine of a house in Kampung Ulu Dulang Kecil, Yan.

Yan District Police Chief Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Muhamad Halim Yatim said that the woman had admitted having given birth to the baby girl in the bathroom of the house.

She then left the baby in the washing machine.

The woman is being remanded in order for a DNA test to be carried out.

It was reported that padi farmer Zainol Hamid, 71, had discovered the baby in the washing machine of his kampung house.

He said that he had heard crying when he went to use the bathroom at about 10.30pm on Tuesday (Oct 27).

Mr Zainol said that at first he thought it was a ghost but upon searching for the source of the sound, discovered the baby girl, with its umbilical cord still intact, in the washing machine of his kampung house.

He said he believed the infant was put into the washing machine by someone who had entered his house through the back door, which was closed at the time, but not locked.
