Malaysian casino and theme park operator Genting Malaysia announced on Nov 13 that vehicles entering popular tourist destination Genting Highlands are set to be charged a private toll fee, without revealing the starting date or amount of the charge.
Vehicles entering Jalan Genting Highlands will be charged a toll fee, Genting said in a news release that was first reported by Malaysian news agency Bernama.
The private road allows motorists to access Resorts World Genting and other destinations in the mountainous terrain popular with domestic and foreign tourists.
It is unclear if the charges will be uniformly applied across all vehicle types, such as private cars and tour buses.
The toll charges are necessary to manage the steep and escalating costs of maintaining the 24km private road and its slopes, which have been borne solely by the company since the 1960s, Genting said.
“Heavy usage on Jalan Genting Highlands has caused a tremendous amount of wear and tear, and requires constant maintenance to ensure the safety of the road users,” it said.
Genting said it sees the adoption of a “user pays” principle as the most sustainable way to defray the costs of road repairs and maintenance.
It added that it employs trained emergency response teams stationed at points near the middle of the hill and at the hilltop, which are on standby around the clock in case of mishaps or accidents.
The announcement comes two days after Resorts World Genting issued a travel advisory over a “temporary road diversion” along the upward-bound section of Jalan Genting Highlands starting at noon on Nov 12.
Motorists have also been sharing images of what appears to be toll structures being built along the private road.
Rumours of a private road charge to enter Genting Highlands in the state of Pahang first surfaced in 2023, when images of a toll gantry being constructed near Gohtong Jaya
A stop-work order was later issued by Pahang’s state authorities in October 2023, with a local council stating that the developer had not submitted plans to begin works at the site.
