- Four prominent world leaders are expected to attend the 47th Asean Summit scheduled to take place in Kuala Lumpur this October, said Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

The Prime Minister said the meeting will gather high-profile world leaders and would ensure that it yields results of lasting value.

“We look forward to welcoming the heads of government of Asean and dialogue partners, including US President Donald Trump and I believe Chinese President Xi Jinping.

“In addition, we received positive indications on the attendance from Brazil’s President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, who currently hold the Brics and G-20 presidency respectively,” said Mr Anwar in his speech during the 58th Asean Day celebration at the Cyber Event Hall on Aug 8.

“But securing their presence is only the first step. The greater test is to ensure that they leave Malaysia and Asean feeling their time was well spent.

“We must ensure that their visit yields results of lasting value. The eyes of the world will be upon us, and we must therefore rise to the occasion,” added the Prime Minister.

Mr Anwar said some of the key issues that will be discussed include economic relations through intra-Asean trade and investments.

“One of the key issues to be deliberated in October would be the economic, intra-Asean trade, cross border investments, energy grid and connectivity,” he added. THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK
