SHAH ALAM – US President Donald Trump once again showed he has not “moved on” as he praised Malaysia and its Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
He touched on regional peace while talking about the Kuala Lumpur Peace Accord (KL Accord) between Thailand and Cambodia.
According to Malaysian Malay-language daily Sinar Harian, Mr Trump said Malaysia excelled as a mediator between the two countries.
“We also enjoyed the best facilities in Malaysia because there was warmth between these two countries (including the weather).
“Malaysia is truly extraordinary!
“The Prime Minister (Anwar) is also a very good leader.
“In just two days, we signed a peace agreement.
“Two leaders met and they were like good friends.
“It (the moment) was something very beautiful because millions of lives can be saved through this agreement, even for hundreds of years,” Mr Trump said.
He said this at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) summit in South Korea on Oct 29.
Mr Trump also expressed hope that peace would remain forever in both countries as well as in the Middle East.
On Oct 26, Mr Trump made his maiden visit to Malaysia to attend the 47th Asean Summit and related summits held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.
Outside the summit, Mr Trump and Datuk Seri Anwar witnessed the signing ceremony of the KL Peace Accord between Thailand Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Cambodia Prime Minister Hun Manet, an effort towards ending the decades-long dispute between the two neighbouring countries.
The peace agreement signed under the Asean-Malaysia Chairmanship 2025 also saw the establishment of the Asean Observer Force to monitor peace efforts and ensure long-term stability in the border area.
In addition, Mr Trump also held a bilateral meeting with Mr Anwar, where both leaders signed the Malaysia-US Reciprocal Trade Agreement and Comprehensive Strategic Partnership aimed at strengthening cooperation in technology, energy and critical minerals. THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK
