State government considers introducing night safari at Johor Zoo

ISKANDAR PUTERI, Johor – The Johor state government is considering introducing a night safari at the Johor Zoo to attract more visitors, said its Menteri Besar Onn Hafiz Ghazi.
He said that some 500,000 local and international visitors have visited the zoo since its reopening on Aug 31, 2024.
Datuk Onn Hafiz said that in the state’s 2025 budget, RM5 million (S$1.51 million) has been allocated for the zoo’s second phase development.
“This initiative is not merely to upgrade existing facilities but also to enhance visitors’ experience by providing a more attractive, modern and interactive environment.
“Among key proposals in this phase is extending the operating hours of the zoo into the night, with the introduction of a night safari concept as a new unique attraction,” he said.
Mr Onn Hafiz added that the state government is looking into several key aspects for the implementation of the initiative, including infrastructure improvements, safety, and animal welfare.
“This initiative requires thorough planning and implementation. This includes the installation of an eco-friendly lighting system that could replicate natural night ambience without disturbing animals’ habitats.
“We will also have to establish a safe path with high-security features for visitors to enjoy the night safari experience.
“Another crucial aspect is to ensure that the animals are well taken care of and their environment is not negatively impacted by the presence of humans,” he said.
