Two sons of former Malaysian prime minister Mahathir Mohamad have declared assets worth over RM1.2 billion (S$365 million) to the country’s anti-graft agency, amid its ongoing probe into their father.

Tan Sri Mokhzani Mahathir declared RM1 billion in assets, while his elder brother Mirzan Mahathir has about RM246 million, Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief Azam Baki said on Jan 21.

Of the RM1 billion, Mr Mokhzani’s personal assets totalled RM360 million.

Mr Mirzan’s personal assets were valued at RM120 million.

“Both individuals have personally declared their assets to me... I am satisfied with their asset declarations,” Tan Sri Azam told the Malaysian media.

The brothers submitted their declarations to the MACC in September 2024, within the timeframe set by the agency, following multiple extensions.

However, Mr Azam said this does not mean the brothers are totally off the hook.

“This investigation is still ongoing, and we will provide further updates as it progresses,” Mr Azam added.

In January 2024, the MACC ordered Mr Mokhzani and Mr Mirzan to declare their assets dating back to 1981, the year Tun Dr Mahathir became premier.

The orders were part of investigations into offshore business records revealed by a journalism consortium, the MACC said at the time, without mentioning that the main target was Dr Mahathir.

Dr Mahathir, who led Malaysia for nearly a quarter century in two different stints, has alleged the probe is politically motivated.

In March, the brothers revealed for the first time that

the probe is targeting the 99-year-old Dr Mahathir

.

“My father is the primary suspect,” Mr Mokhzani told Bloomberg on March 23, 2024. “We are witnesses to whatever it is that they are investigating.”
