SEREMBAN – A 35-year-old soldier in Malaysia claimed trial to a charge of punching a female driver, after

he allegedly attacked her following a traffic accident

in March.

Mr Abdul Hafiz Abu Bakar pleaded not guilty after the charge was read to him before magistrate Syed Farid Syed Ali.

He was charged with committing the offence against a 28-year-old woman at around 10.20pm on March 29 at Taman Satria in Senawang.

Mr Abdul Hafiz was charged under Section 323 of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term of up to one year or a maximum fine of RM2,000 (S$600), or both, upon conviction.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Nadia Ezzati Mohd Zainal then asked the court to set bail at RM2,000.

However, the accused, who was represented by Ms Chrysandy Lai from the Legal Aid Department, asked for a lower amount.

Ms Lai said the accused was not a flight risk as he held a permanent job, adding that he also had to provide for his two young children and parents.

Mr Syed Farid set bail at RM2,000 with one surety, and fixed May 19 as the date for next mention.

According to media reports, the victim suffered bruising on her right rib and swelling on the back of her head due to the alleged assault.

The incident occurred when the woman, who was driving a sedan, failed to avoid the man’s wife, 34, and their seven-year-old daughter, who had suddenly crossed the road, resulting in minor injuries to both.
