A sinkhole appeared in Jalan Burmah near Komtar, the 65-storey landmark tower in George Town, Penang, Malaysia, on Sept 21, causing traffic congestion in the city.

The sinkhole measured about 1.5m wide and 2.5m deep. Komtar assemblyman Teh Lai Heng said the incident, which occurred at about 9am, is believed to have been caused by a burst underground sewage pipe.

“Indah Water Konsortium has deployed its contractors to fix the leak and repair the road,” he said.

Mr Teh added that officers from the Penang Island City Council (MBPP), the local government authority in George Town, were on site to manage traffic.

“To divert traffic, MBPP officers are stationed at the scene. We expect work to be done soon and traffic to resume,” he said, assuring that no major safety risks have been reported.

Mr Teh also noted that the swift response by repair teams helped prevent any mishap. THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK
